"St
Barnard " Rare 16th
century French antique stained glass window. Depicting
Bernard of Clairvaux, a French monk,
holding a staff and prayer book. Dated around 1525-30 and hand painted on
"Pot" coloured glass using silver stain paints. (Medieval glass artists
achieved a
very high quality of skill in the colouring of glass, and the industry
thrived across Europe until the mid-16th century.) The window is
in five framed sections and was restored and re-leaded in the 1920's and
has recently undergone further restoration in accordance to the technical
guidelines of the Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi. It is exceptionally rare
to fine medieval windows in this condition.
Also see Rel227 for a similar window.
Province: It is believed that the set of four windows were
purchased by renowned US decorator Dorothy Draper who was hired by Col.
Harry E Stewart in 1934 to design the interior of the penthouse at the
historic Dallas Stoneleigh Hotel. Although the hotel featured ornate
plaster ceilings, marble floors and 500 year old English oak panelling,
the windows were never used and were sent
to the UK soon after to be stored in the crypt of St Giles Church, Spokes
Poges, Buckinghamshire, England, where they were kept
for the past 60 years until recently. They were found in a wooden crate
with the following information:
"To The Vicarage, Stoke Poges, Bucks, England.
From Col Harry E. Stewart, 5115 East Grand Ave Dallas, Texas"
