Decorative antique stained glass
window set, c1865, removed
from a Victorian mansion in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England.
Comprising of 5 leaded and hand painted panels, one a large
central hand painted window depicting "Fortuna" the Goddess of Fortune,
Chance and Prosperity. Also with two side panels and two arched
top panels, all hand painted with bows, swags, garlands of Acanthus and
flowers and with large painted roundels of Fruit and Flowers. Excellent
quality of hand painting, with acid etching and enamel paints, no fading, with glass and lead in
excellent condition.
Province: The mansion was built in the 1860s in York Place by Richard Ellis,
who amongst other things, was Mayor of Harrogate, built and
funded the construction of new roads, a hospital and donated
Queen Victorian's statue to the town of Harrogate in 1887, also
he established Ashville Collage which is still in existence today.
The window, depicting the spirit of generosity symbioses Ellis
himself. The set was originally situated in the inner porch of the
property and removed around 1975 prior to demolition, placed in storage
for 30 years and is now offered for sale.
